HOPE Malaria (Botswana)
Humana People to People Botswana has been involved in the elimination of malaria through E8 Malaria Elimination project as part of the consortium led by ADPP Mozambique. HPP Botswana has also implemented a Malaria Control Pilot Project from 2017-2018 September. In the projects HPp Botswana worked closely with Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), Public health, District Health Management Teams (DHMT’s) and the community leadership to implement the Community Acting Together to Eliminate Malaria (CATTEM) approach. From both the E8 and the Malaria Control Pilot Project, what emerged as HPP Botswana’s major contribution was the ability to mobilize, educate and create awareness in people to demand services to control malaria in the communities.
HOPE Humana Malaria’s overall outcome of the project is to engage local communities, empower and equip them with correct and adequate information for them to make effective and long lasting interventions in malaria control. HPP Botswana intends to support the Government of Botswana and contribute to the elimination of malaria through community empowerment and mobilization by increasing community uptake of available government health services to fight malaria.
The main project activity is community engagement on malaria control. This activity augurs well with Objective 5 of the National Malaria Strategic Plan 2018-2023 that is to effect behavior change through reaching at least 90% of the population with appropriate information for malaria elimination. The project expects to reach out to 79,000 people in the three districts, Kgatleng, Mahalapye and Palapye.
